The Ant and the Grasshopper: A Short Story About Laziness and Hard Work

Laziness is one of the most undesirable traits, and one we must rid ourselves of. My dear friend, let's put ourselves in the shoes of the lazy grasshopper. I imagine you're wondering how? Well, let's learn about the story of the ant and the grasshopper from Aesop's fables for children.

the ant and the grasshopper

Tthe ant and the grasshopper

In a beautiful forest, there lived an active and wise ant who knew the right time to work, and knew the right time to play and rest.

Meanwhile, she had a neighbor, the grasshopper, for whom all the time was play, loitering on the beach, drinking iced juice in the summer, sleeping late and waking up late, with a lot of laziness.

The ant advised her friend, the grasshopper, to gather grain, because winter could come at any time. But the grasshopper advised the ant to play a little, telling her that work was very boring.

Preparing for winter

Each of them took their own advice. The ant began to work hard to collect and store grains for the winter, while the grasshopper chose laziness and play, and completely forgot about the winter.

Days passed, and the ant stored her food, while the grasshopper did not collect any food. So the grasshopper said to the ant: My friend, you are very poor, wasting your time on hard work. Why don't you play with me a little?

The ant said: Tomorrow we will know who among us is the poor one, and for the last time, gather your food before winter, grasshopper.

The grasshopper did not listen to the ant's words; he heard them in one ear and let them out the other.

Winter arrives

The clouds gathered, the winds blew, and both the ant and the grasshopper fled to their homes. The ant lit the fire in the fireplace and sat down to eat, while the grasshopper searched his home for food.

The rains came down suddenly, and water leaked into the grasshopper's house. He went up to fix the roof of his house, only to find his neighbor, the active ant, sitting and eating comfortably, while he paid the price for his laziness.

Asking for help

After repairing the roof of his house, the grasshopper went to ask the ant for food, and said to her: “O kind ant, I am sorry that I did not take your advice. Can you lend me just one grain of wheat?”

The ant was angry at what the grasshopper said, so she asked him: What were you doing in the summer?

The grasshopper remained silent and could not answer the ant's question. The ant said: Take this grain of wheat for yourself, and do not ask me again for food. Go out and find your own food.

From that day on, the grasshopper learned the value of work, so he went out in the winter cold looking for food, and he vowed to be active.

The moral of the story of the ant and the grasshopper

I think we now understand the lesson that the grasshopper learned: when we work hard at the beginning, we rest at the end, while the lazy person never gets anything.

So remember, be as active as an ant, and not as lazy as a grasshopper. This story is from Aesop's fables, and it does not mean that a real grasshopper is lazy.
